Building a core men's knitwear assortment
Most menswear knit ranges are built on a small number of reliable styles: a fine-gauge crewneck or V-neck for layering, a medium-gauge everyday sweater, a half-zip or collared knit, and a cardigan. Getting these right in fit and fabric matters more than adding many fashion styles.
Choose gauge by use. Fine gauges (12–14) sit neatly under jackets and work as smart layers; 7-gauge is the classic everyday weight; chunky 3–5 gauge knits suit outdoor and winter styling. Covering two or three of these weights gives a range that works across seasons.
Pay attention to trims and stability. Zips, buttons and plackets take the most wear on men's knits, and rib recovery at cuffs and hem decides whether a sweater keeps its shape. These details are confirmed on the sample and checked again in production.
If you sell unisex, plan grading carefully. A unisex size range usually needs its own measurement chart rather than a stretched women's or men's chart, so the fit works across body types.
